Climbing Community | Climbing Tips | Start Climbing | Youth Climbing

As back-to-school season rolls around, parents are always on the lookout for fun, engaging activities to keep their kids active and learning. Enter rock climbing – a sport that's fun for all ages - whether your 3 or 73! Imagine a playground that stretches up to the ceiling, filled with colorful holds and exciting challenges. That's what a climbing gym looks like through a child's eyes!

Why Climbing is Great for Kids
  1. Physical Development: Climbing helps improve strength, flexibility, and coordination.

  2. Problem-Solving Skills: Each route is like a puzzle, encouraging critical thinking.

  3. Confidence Building: Overcoming challenges on the wall boosts self-esteem.

  4. Social Skills: Climbing is a community sport, fostering friendships and teamwork.

Getting Started: Tips for Introducing Kids to Climbing
  1. Start Small: Visit a climbing gym near you! The front desk staff will show you around the gym, walk you through basic safety information, and send you on your way! Our tip - begin with bouldering (low climbing without ropes), just to get them comfortable with heights. Book a Guided Climb with our instructors, or turn it into a family outing!

  2. Make it Fun: Turn climbs into games, like racing to touch specific colored holds. Check out some of our recommendations for climbing games!

  3. Celebrate Every Achievement: Whether it's reaching a new highpoint or trying a tricky move, praise their efforts.

  4. Lead by Example: Climb alongside them to show it's fun for all ages!

  5. Be Patient: Some kids take to climbing instantly, others need time. Let them progress at their own pace.

Gear Up

Kids don't need much to start climbing, but properly fitting shoes and a chalk bag can make their experience more enjoyable. Most climbing gyms, including Movement, offer rental equipment for beginners.

Taking it to the Next Level

As your child's interest grows, consider enrolling them in structured programs. At Movement, we offer a range of after-school programs. From our Little Rockers programs to Elite competitive teams, there's a perfect fit for every young climber.

Remember, the goal is to have fun! Climbing offers a unique blend of physical activity, mental challenge, and social interaction. It's not just about reaching the top – it's about the journey, the friendships made, and the confidence gained along the way.

So, next time you're looking for a new after-school activity, why not give climbing a try? Your kids might just discover a new passion that will keep them active, engaged, and reaching for new heights – literally!
