New to Movement? Your First 15-Day Climbing Checklist

Written by Movement | 12/1/25 9:31 PM

So you just joined Movement…WELCOME! Whether you signed up because a friend dragged you in on a guest pass or you are testing the waters with one of our Trial Memberships, the first two weeks in this community are a magical time.

You’re stoked, you’re curious, you’re possibly sore in places you didn’t know had names (that’s your flexor carpi radialis by the way), and you’re trying to figure out how to make the most of it.

Good news: we made you a checklist.
A literal, “tick these off and you’ll have a killer start to your climbing journey” checklist.

Let’s get into it.

✔ Visit the Gym at Least Three Times

After extensive and exhaustive research (aka our best guess), three visits in fifteen days is the sweet spot when you are starting out.

You don’t need to go full “I live here now,” and risk getting burnt out on a new hobby, but showing up three times helps you settle in, start learning movement patterns, and build enough familiarity that you stop calling everything “the grab thingy.”

The tried and true routine we recommend is two climbing sessions and a chill day where you stretch, and do some cross-training, maybe it's just your moment to zone out to your favorite podcast on the treadmill. You could even take a class, which brings us to check number 2!

✔ Take at Least One Yoga or Fitness Class

Climbing is great, it's what draws many of us to the gym in the first place, but adding yoga + fitness is where the magic happens. These classes can do so much for your journey. Sure, they help you recover, build balance, strengthen muscle, but they also help you meet other humans who are also passionate about moving.

We partner with local instructors to bring an exceptional range of classes to both studios, so there’s truly something for everyone. Maybe you want slow flow and gentle stretching in a restorative yoga class, or maybe you’re ready to sweat it out in Total Body. Some of our locations even offer specialty classes like Pilates and Les Mills.

Drop into a class in your first 15 days to build a strong foundation and explore all Movement has to offer.

✔ Buy Your First Pair of Climbing Shoes

Rentals are great until suddenly… they’re not.

Once you’ve visited a couple of times, getting your own shoes makes everything feel better. Edges feel cleaner, footwork feels sharper, and the rubber is far stickier. The best part of climbing shoes of your own is that the actual mold to your foot shape over time, leading to a much better climbing experience across the board. We love getting climbers into their first pair of shoes, that’s why new movement members get 20% their first retail purchase!

If choosing a pair of shoes feels overwhelming, the good news is we wrote a whole guide on it.

✔ Attend an Event

Events are where the spark of community really ignites.

From meet-up groups and comps to partner finder events and themed nights, showing up to just one event in your first two weeks helps you connect, laugh, and maybe meet the person who becomes your lifelong belay buddy.

✔ Find a climbing partner

Whether you are looking for a solid belay partner or simply an accountability buddy, one of the biggest cruxes in climbing can be finding a climbing partner or two to climb with regularly. We've got some tips to help you make new friends and lifelong climbing partners.

Check to see if your gym has a Trade-a-Belay board on Facebook and post that you're looking for a partner. Or come to our next Partner Project, where one of our friendly staff members facilitates matching you up with other climbers with similar goals to you.

✔ Follow Us on Socials

This is the easiest win on the list. Our social media is the best way to hear about everything happening at the gym without *actually* being in the gym, join an online community of fellow movers!

Following us keeps you in the loop for:
• Events
• Class updates
• New climbs
• Community Features
• The occasional climbing meme

Catch us on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube!

That's all there is to it!

You’re off to an incredible start, and we’re seriously stoked you’re here. Keep exploring, keep asking questions, keep celebrating the small wins. If you’ve checked off even a few of these items, that’s a pretty solid sign you’re finding your rhythm, and it's time to consider becoming a member!  We’re rooting for you, cheering with you, and can’t wait to see you in the gym!
