Hunting for the Right Climbing Chalk

beginner climbing | Climbing Tips | Climbing Gear

Chalk is a small thing that makes a big difference on the wall. It helps keep your hands dry so you can stay focused on the next move—especially when the holds get a little more demanding.

Most chalk is made from magnesium carbonate, designed to absorb moisture and improve grip. The right type comes down to preference and how you like to climb.

Powder Chalk

Loose chalk is the most common option. Easy to use and easy to refill, it gives you full coverage when you need it.

Liquid Chalk

Liquid chalk goes on wet and dries quickly, leaving a thin layer that lasts longer between uses. A good option if your hands tend to sweat more.

Chalk Ball

Chalk balls offer a more controlled application—less mess, same benefit. Just give it a squeeze and you’re good to go.

Chalk Blocks

Chalk blocks are solid pieces you can break down to your preferred texture. Great if you like a little more control over how your chalk feels.

No Chalk

Some climbers skip chalk altogether. If your hands stay dry or you prefer the feel of the holds as-is, this can work too.
