5 Activities Parents and Kids Can Enjoy Together at a Climbing Gym

If you're looking for a family fitness activity that doesn't feel like a workout and has a wonderful sense of play, the climbing gym might be exactly what you're looking for. Movement is a climbing, yoga, and fitness gym with locations across the country,  and it's one of the more genuinely fun places for families to be active together. Here's what a family visit actually looks like.

1. Bouldering Together

Bouldering is climbing without ropes over thick padded floors. These shorter walls have an incredibly low barrier to entry that makes it perfect for families with kids of any age.  Bouldering is a fantastic place to start because kids take to it naturally, and the problem-solving element keeps it interesting for parents too. You might even feel like you are a kid again, working on the same puzzles and cheering each other on.

One important thing to keep in mind: the bouldering area is a shared space, and because all falls are ground falls in a ropeless environment, climbers on the wall can and will fall. Keeping a close eye on your little ones and helping keep fall zones clear makes for a better experience for everyone.

Climbing is one of the best family fitness activities out there because the difficulty scales to whoever is climbing. Beginners stay on easier problems close to the ground, while more experienced climbers can push themselves on harder routes all while staying side by side the whole time. 2. Top Rope Climbing

For families with kids ready to get a little higher off the ground, top rope climbing adds a new dimension to the experience. One person climbs, one person belays, and that teamwork element makes it a true bonding experience in a way that most gym activities aren't. Movement offers Intro to Ropes classes for anyone over the age of 13, which is a fantastic class for a parent to take in order to climb more independently in the gym  Check out all the reasons climbing is great for kids.

3. Youth Programs and Summer Camps

Movement offers after-school programs, seasonal camps, and youth climbing teams at locations across the country. Each session blends climbing, games, and skill-building challenges designed to help kids grow on and off the wall. For parents, it's a structured option when you need it, allowing you time to explore the rest of the gym! Not to mention, for the kids, it's one of the more memorable ways to spend time outside of school. Learn more about Movement's summer camps.

4. Fitness Classes

Movement's group fitness classes cover everything from strength training to high-intensity workouts. Most fitness areas and classes are available to participants 13 and older, making them a great option for parents and teens looking to build a shared fitness routine. Programs and schedules vary by location, so it's worth checking what's on at your nearest gym. Not sure what a Movement membership includes? Here's a breakdown.

5. Yoga Classes

Yoga is included with every Movement membership, and it's a great option for families looking for something a little slower-paced alongside the climbing. From beginner-friendly Flow classes to Restorative sessions, there's something for most ages and comfort levels. Most yoga classes are open to participants 13 and older, and it's a nice way to wind down together after a session on the wall. Read more about what Movement's yoga program has to offer.
