In December of 2025, Movement Centennial hosted the first-ever U.S. clinic featuring Tokyo’s world-renowned B-Pump Ogikubo team. Led by Katsuaki “Katsu” Miyazawa and Tsukuru Hori, the four-day clinic introduced the Katsu Method of routesetting and athlete training to the American climbing community. The clinic consisted of four days of setting, climbing, and direct coaching from Katsu and Tsukuru themselves. On Days 1 and 2, we invited eight total routesetters from Movement and other climbing gyms across the Front Range of Colorado to set boulders in collaboration with the B-Pump team. On Day 3, senior level athletes, including Natalia Grossman and Colin Duffy, worked their way through the boulders in a knockout style round—if you don't complete Level 1 in one minute or two attempts, you don't move on to the next level of that style. Finally, Day 4 concluded with junior athletes from Youth Nationals through National Cup level working their way through the boulder problems. Climbing holds are an integral part of modern indoor climbing, but they haven’t always existed in the form we know today. The evolution of climbing holds has shaped the sport in ways we often take for granted. The types of holds that were created dictate the style of movement possible, influence how climbers train, and even precipitated the development of indoor climbing as its own distinct sport. Without these innovations, indoor climbing would look vastly different than it does today.

You might think route setting is just drilling plastic holds onto walls all day. And sure, that's technically part of it - but saying that's all there is to setting is like saying painting is just putting colors on canvas or cooking is just throwing ingredients in a pan.
